Ornithology
Ornithology is the branch of zoology that studies birds, including their anatomical and physical characteristics, biology, behaviour, ecology and species distribution. These vertebrates are excellent indicators of environmental quality: changes in bird populations can provide valuable insights into both natural and human-induced environmental changes.
The Museum has an active Ornithology section, supported by important historical and more recently established collections, which provide a valuable record of changes over time in the birdlife of the Venetian Lagoon and the Venetian mainland.
Since the 1980s, the Museum has been actively involved in the development of ornithological atlases at municipal and provincial level, as well as in national bird monitoring projects. It therefore serves as an important reference centre for ornithological surveys, involving specialist associations as well as individual researchers and enthusiasts, environmental professionals and occasional observers.
This extensive network has recently led to the publication of the Bird Atlas of the City of Venice.
