A conference to mark the launch of Alice Channer: Megaflora, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia Giancarlo Ligabue, 29 April – 28 September 2025.

This event will examine the presentation of Channer’s work in Venice, from her inclusion in Massimiliano Gioni’s 55th Biennale Arte in 2013 through until the current project. Bringing together contributors of the publication, and officials from Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, it will also consider the role visual art can play in representing the effects of, and causes for, climate change, and the ways in which the Natural History Museum is adapting in the 21st century in order to promote awareness of environmental issues.

The 2023 programme includes a range of activities offered throughout the year, which tell the story of the museum’s activities, its varied public, and its evolution over the last century. ‘The Museum of Yesterday’ is organised as a journey of rediscovery and appreciation of the museum’s main scientific collections, along with the scientists and great naturalists who created them. A presentation of the activities conducted by the museum in its many fields and its link with the area will provide the occasion for explaining the function of ‘The Museum Today’, and how many of its projects are shared with associations, organisations and institutes in the city. Finally, we would also like to consider 2023 as a moment for reflection and for imagining ‘The Museum of Tomorrow’ as a dialogue ‘in the city’ and ‘with the city’ in which we confront together the increasingly topical issues of environmental compatibility, ecological transition and new cultural offerings for our region.

The programme scheduled by the scientific staff includes temporary exhibitions of the collections not usually on show to the public, visits to the museum’s ‘behind-the-scenes’ repositories, presentations of ongoing scientific projects, as well as meetings, workshops and lectures, special educational activities, and collateral events at other venues. The centenary will also provide an occasion for rethinking the layout of some of the museum spaces and for integrating a part of the information material, with a particular focus on creating interactive stations.

A day of celebration is planned for the spring, with information points, workshops, games and shows that will involve the associations and institutes that have been working with the museum for years. This important anniversary will also be shared with the entire community.

The Museum is hosting the regional phase of the tenth edition of Experimental Science Games, organised by the National Association of Natural Science Teachers (ANISN).

The initiative involves 26 local schools and 52 students, who will compete for participation in the national phase.

The avifauna in the city’s parks and on its streets and canals is rapidly changing: species and their behaviour are evolving.
As an introduction to local urban birdlife, the Museum will present “Birds in the city”, a project created in collaboration with the Venice Birdwatching Association, which is mapping the birds in the Venice Municipality through research that is open to all.

The international festival dedicated to the art of glass returns with more than 180 different events including exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, workshops, performances and educational activities.

Comune di Venezia, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Cini/LE STANZE DEL VETRO, Istituto Veneto and Consorzio Promovetro Murano present the second edition of the festival that from 9th to 16th September will involve all the main institutions in the city, with several new additions.

From 9 to 16 September 2018, more than 150 participants, with a total of over 180 events across Venice, Mestre and Murano, will take part in the second edition of The Venice Glass Week, the major international festival dedicated to the art of glass, conceived to celebrate the artistic and economic resource for which Venice is famous around the world.

The event is promoted by the Town Council of Venice and conceived by three of Venice’s principal cultural institutions with considerable experience and expertise in the field of glass – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti – along with the most important trade association, the Consorzio Promovetro Murano, which also manages the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark of the Veneto Region.  This year’s edition has again attracted a large number of participants, with a 20% increase over the first year’s festival.

Hundreds of applications were originally submitted for review and selection by the curatorial committee that was introduced this year, chaired by the Venetian glass historian Rosa Barovier Mentasti, and including critics and curators Chiara Bertola and Jean Blanchaert, journalist and editor of the German magazine Neues Glas Uta Klotz, and chemist, university teacher and expert in the composition of glass materials Marco Verità. The high volume of applications, from foundations, art galleries, museums – among which we note the participation for the first time of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Palazzo Fortuny and Museo di Storia Naturale -, cultural institutions, universities and advanced education institutes, as well as glass furnaces, companies, artists and private Italian and foreign collectors, confirms the dynamism and vitality of Venice’s cultural scene, and provides a strong indication of the local and international interest in the field of glass.

The rich and expansive programme for The Venice Glass Week festival will involve varied and widespread events across the district, which this year also extends to the mainland, with Mestre now one of its main centres, along with Venice and Murano. The events, most with free entrance, will all have artistic glass as their main theme and be aimed at audiences of all ages: exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, seminars, prize-giving ceremonies, film screenings, educational activities, parties, drinks receptions, open studios and a non-competitive night-time race around the candle-lit streets, canals and glass-furnaces of Murano.

Exhibition: Kim Kototamalune – Memories of Eden
From 9 to 16 September, 10am-6pm, closed on Mondays.

Born in 1976 in Ho-chi-Minh Ville (Vietnam), Kim Kototamalune lives and works in France, where she has long accumulated the learning of different traditional crafts, before taking an interest in glasswork. A material that she spins «out of blanks» without a mould, weld after weld building a grid until a form appears. «Glass – a solid that has forgotten its liquid molecular nature, proves to be an accurate medium to express this both frail and strong dimension of life» she explains «Matter that borders on the immaterial in a troubling way, thus bringing the invisible out within the visible».

Some of our behaviour is changing the world’s climate. We emit too many greenhouse gases that accumulate in the atmosphere causing global warming. In the daily news we are already talking about warmer summers and colder winters, more devastating hurricanes and rising seas.

But what kind of future can we expect for ourselves and our children? The Museum is presenting an afternoon of study on the causes of climate change and the effects we will have to face. By talking to experts we will learn together what to expect and how to prepare for the most rapid climate change that humankind has ever witnessed.

The event is organised in collaboration with the University of Padua.

Separated from Africa tens of millions of years ago, Madagascar has since developed its own unusual fauna and flora that are drastically different to those of the other continental masses, both near and far.

Similarly, the colonisation by man, which has taken place on a widespread scale only in the past 2,000 years, has seen the mixture of African, Asian, Arab and European elements, forming a culture of “metissage” comprising no less than 18 ethnic groups, each with its own history and traditions but all sharing a basic language of Indonesian origin and a cult of the dead, called “famadihana”.

Unfortunately, Madagascar is also a land of strong contrasts, with widespread social and economic problems. The two days-long event, which focuses on aspects concerning the natural wealth and cultural diversity of this island, includes the presence of researchers studying biodiversity and health operatives who will explain how Italy is involved in helping in this country.

In collaboration with the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali of Turin and the Associazione “Malagasy Miray”.

The Istituzione Parco della Laguna (Lagoon Park Institution) is organising a competition for infant, primary and secondary schools in the province of Venice for the purpose of raising awareness about the area of the lagoon, and encouraging children to learn why it is important to defend this heritage while at the same time collecting ideas from them for sustainable use of the area.

In this edition, participants are invited to suggest their own ideas for the Park’s activities: for welcoming visitors, encouraging coexistence between residents and their environment, promoting the landscape and its ‘natural’ inhabitants and, finally, for publicising the Park itself.

At the end of the didacticprogramme, which includes aseries of creative workshops, the classes will present their projects, which will goon display in the Museum; this event will also be an opportunity to involve local citizens and participate in the section dedicated to the Venice Lagoon, which will be opening soon.

But the coexistence with important animals from anecological point of view, but which have always been considered dangerous to men and in competition with their activities, can still cause conflict with local populations. After the unexpected reports of monk seals in the Lagoon of Venice, the Museum of Natural History, in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice and LIPU Venice section, is organizing a conference-projection of this particular species of marine mammal.

How many monk seals live in the northern Adriatic?
How do they behave?
What factors have contributed to their near extinction and what their recovery?
You can live together with humans?

These and other questions will be answered the Croatian historian William Klinger, the naturalist Antonio Village and documentary filmmaker and Chairman of the Group Monk Seal,Emanuele Coppola.

Cinzio Gibin presents ” Letters by Stefano Andrea Renier ” the book he edited that provides a significant overview of the thought and action of the Italian naturalist.

Stefano Andrea Renier (Chioggia , January 25th 1759 – Padova , January 6th 1830) was the author of important studies in zoology and marine biology, especially on mollusks and shells on the Adriatic. It also introduced a new method of zoological classification based on the development of the nervous system .

The work unfolds along three themes: a first large group of letters concerning the organization and development of the Museum of Natural History, University of Padua , a second smaller group on the relationship with the naturalist Giambattista Brocchi and that a final considers the activities Renier as a doctor , relations between naturalists , its political and administrative activities .

From the letters emerges a historical – political and cultural , of which Renier was the star , reflecting the dynamism of Venetian society in the late eighteenth century / first three decades of the nineteenth century.

The National Association of Science Museums (ANMS) brings together institutions that engage in conservation, research and communication in science. Its tasks include the protection of national treasures of scientific museology, support to the educational and informative, the promotion of agreements between institutions to facilitate exchange of experience and for the formulation of common rules.

To implement its program the ANMS proposes each year conferences on topics of general interest. The Natural History Museum will organize and host the XXIII National Congress, articulated as usual in most sessions, oral presentations and poster exhibition on specific issues.

Since 2012, the Museum of Natural History of Venice has lunched a reserach programme aiming at an increased awareness of its palaeontological holdings, and in particular of the numerous items regarding dinosaurs and the other great reptiles of the past, including the anatomical study of the famous example of Ouranosaurus Nigeriensis.

In order to spread the initial results of the research, but also to reveal curiousities and recent discoveries about dinosaurs, the Museum is arranging a day of thematic conferences and workshops for families. Please note that the activities will be held in Italian.

For the occasion, from December 7th 2013 to January 12th 2014, the Natural History Museum of Venice will host a full-size reconstruction of the dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia, made entirely by a team of Italian scientists and artists.

Under hte formula “Muve Contemporaneo”, the Natural History Museum of Venice deals with the relationship between art and science and art and nature in the exhibition “Contemporary Bestiary. Between art and science. Italian Artists from the ACACIA Collection“.
After the great success of its Milanese exhibition, in Venice ACACIA will be offering a selection of about 30 works of art, which will create an ironic and surprising dialogue with the natural collections of Venice’s Natural History Museum.

Aside from the natural items, established Italian and international artists will be present: Maurizo Cattelan and his famous Musicanti di Brema with their savage music, Vanessa Beecroft whose performances are veritable tableaux vivants, Paola Pivi, Francesco Vezzoli, Rosa Barba, Lara Favaretto, Luca Trevisani, Adrian paci, Roberto Cuoghi, Nico Vascellari, Francesco Gennari, Marcella Vanzo, Sabrina Mezzaqui, Marzia Migliora, Mario Airò, Gianni Caravaggio.

“HerpeThon” is a national event promoted by the Societaas Herpetologica Italica, an association for those studying amphibians and reptiles in Italy, and by the Regional Natural History Museum of Turin.

The theme for the 2013 edition is “problems of conservation of the herpetological fauna in the third millennium: extinction, introduction of alien species, international trade and protection programmes in Italy and int he world”.

This year, the Natural History Museum of Venice will again be taking part in the initiative with a day of educational conferences (in Italian). Entrance in free.

The Natural History Museum of Venice houses important exhibits of large marine animals which are very popular but hard to observe in local seas. Among these are the recently assembled and fascinating skeletons of a fin whale and of a sperm whale, together with those of numerous sharks from the recently restored historic collections.

The marine biology collections have also been joined by two rare examples of turtles that were recently beached on the local coast: a large leatherback sea turtle and a young green sea turtle.

The study of these reptiles has provided new data for the project monitoring turtles in the Adriatic, on which the scientific staff has been working for several years.

In order to promote these finds, the Natural History Museum of Venice is organising a day-long event dedicated to the great inhabitants of the sea, with conferences and workshops for families.

This has seen the involvement of about 200 volunteers over a period of three years.

Upon the conclusion of the first phase of the project, the museum has organised a day dedicated to butterflies, with conferences for adults and educational activities for children.

On the same day, a photographic exhibition of the best images drawn from the project’s vast archive will be inaugurated.

The project has ended with the publication of an “Ornithological atlas” including over 150 descriptive and photographic entries of the species monitored, and the maps showing the birds’ distribution.

With the conclusion of the project, the museum offers a day dedicated to birds, with a series of educational conferences and the organisation of thematic workshops for families.

The new publication will be presented during the day.

Traveling theater show loosely based on the text by Ludovico Ariosto, adapted and performed by Alessandro Bressanello.

The Erbolato is a kind of monologue in prose published posthumously in Venice, in 1545, which may have arisen as an interlude to be recited during the breaks of the representations of comedies. The show is a great speech lying to the public, a kind of advertisement with blatant lies, which shows once again the theme of the ease with which man is fooled.

The text is enriched by Ariosto and pulls jokes of Commedia dell’Arte.
