Cinzio Gibin presents ” Letters by Stefano Andrea Renier ” the book he edited that provides a significant overview of the thought and action of the Italian naturalist.
Stefano Andrea Renier (Chioggia , January 25th 1759 – Padova , January 6th 1830) was the author of important studies in zoology and marine biology, especially on mollusks and shells on the Adriatic. It also introduced a new method of zoological classification based on the development of the nervous system .
The work unfolds along three themes: a first large group of letters concerning the organization and development of the Museum of Natural History, University of Padua , a second smaller group on the relationship with the naturalist Giambattista Brocchi and that a final considers the activities Renier as a doctor , relations between naturalists , its political and administrative activities .
From the letters emerges a historical – political and cultural , of which Renier was the star , reflecting the dynamism of Venetian society in the late eighteenth century / first three decades of the nineteenth century.
